We present a systematic approach to design lightguide devices which combines the benefits of functional and parametric design and optimization strategies. We discuss typical design tasks, with emphasis on the trade-off between uniformity and system efficiency in different examples.

We show how to include the diffractive or metasurfaces in an optical system and how you can perform a full physical optics simulation which accounts for all the electromagnetic effects occurring in the system.

We have developed specialized field solvers, working fully in an electromagnetic physical optics framework, which work together in a nonsequential manner to effectively simulate what is happening inside a laser resonator.
