The Fourier Transform

VirtualLab Fusion provides fast physical-optics modeling by connecting different field solvers. Some of them are formulated in the space domain and others in the Fourier domain. Each component comes with a solver and calls for the fields in the output planes of other solvers. This step can include up to two Fourier transforms per connection. The speed of the Fourier transforms is crucial for the performance of physical-optics simulations. The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) sometimes suffers from too high sampling effort. That is the reason for using the semi-analytical [Wang 2019] and pointwise Fourier transforms [Wang 2020] in VirtualLab Fusion.
